Your Ears Will Thank You: Geoffrey Gurrumal Yunupingu

Not since Ray LaMontagne‘s debut album in 2004 has a voice pierced through all other distractions and sent my mind into a haze of tranquility and goosebumps.

Geoffrey Gurrumal Yunupingu is a member of the Gumatj clan of northeast Arnhemland off the tip of Australia and it is the songs and stories of the Gumatj clan that Gurrumal incorporates into the contemporary songs on his debut solo album, the eponymously named Gurrumal.

The following song Wiyathul is the first track off the album, and will provide possibly the most blissful six minutes and nineteen seconds of your day, or night:

Simply sublime, with more than a touch of Ismaël Lô‘s Tajabone in certain aspects.

Naturally, I shall have to disagree (it’s beautiful!), but in terms of criticism it has to be the quirkiest yet…

Hosa, with a comment like that it is understandable why you do not appreciate talent when you hear it.
