1.2 million free copies of the “special edition” New York Times were circulated in New York and Los Angeles, in addition to a website, above.

The main story in the paper appears beneath the headlines “Iraq War Ends” and “Troops to Return Immediately,” while another declares, “Nation Sets Its Sights on Building Sane Economy.”

Funded by small online contributions, the activists behind the prank say they wanted to make sure the administration of Democratic President-elect Barack Obama keeps its promises.
